“It’s failure that gives you the proper perspective on success.”
Ellen DeGeneres
One of the most frequent pieces of advice that we find online on personal productivity is that we must plan our day well in advance! However, is that all that we need to do, to be the best productive version of ourselves?
We decided to dig a bit deep to unravel some of the most common reasons why we fail to hit targets that we set for ourselves, more than often, if not always. Before we begin, if you have not read our previous blog on ‘how to get the most out of your day’, then do add that to your read-list
So let’s get started:
1. Lack of Focus
The most prominent reason why we fail to meet our daily targets is the lack of focus, in fact, it’s not about lack but rather an inconsistency of the focus we put in our tasks. Sometimes, it is just not possible to focus, given the situation at that moment. It’s okay. But for most of the other times, when things are in our control, we still lose that zeal to get the work done and tend to get distracted.
TIP: Avoidable Interruptions should be avoided!
2. Fail to initiate the effort
At times, while setting the goals, our brain is more focused on the outcome of the goal, than the effort needed to achieve it . For example, if you set a target of going for running, the focus at the moment is on the results you would attain post achieving your goal, say, the energy level, freshness, lean body figure etc, but, when it’s time to act on it, well, your brain instantly starts to calculate the efforts you need to put in, say, wake up earlier than usual, hit the track-suits and actually go out for the run. Given the inability of our brain to act, it is easily convinced that the effort is not rewarding enough,at least for that moment. This shift of thought from rewards to effort makes us lose the WHY factor of our goal and eventually ends up in delay or canceling of the goal.
Tip: Just Do It!
3. Uninspiring/Unrealistic Goals
Does your goal motivate you enough? Let’s be honest here, if the goal you set up for yourself does not excite you, you will never have the motivation to get it done. Catching the flip side, at times, we set up goals that are unrealistic to achieve at the given time and situation.
Tip: Set up the goals which inspire you and are achievable in the given time period.
4. Lack of commitment
Each time you miss a goal, ask yourself, did you really try hard to get it done? People who are committed to their goals do whatever it takes to achieve it and even then if they fail, they keep on trying to reach the point they planned for. That’s the difference. If missing a goal does not affect you and you are okay with that, Then that’s what is not okay.
Tip: Don’t give up too soon. Do whatever it takes to get it done.
5. Poor planning ruins the fun
No matter how well you have tackled the above points, if you have failed to plan out your goals well, you’ll certainly miss your targets. By poor planning we mean firstly there could be a scenario where you failed to plan the day altogether, either you kept too many heavy tasks in one day or you just could not anticipate the obstacles you would be dealing with. Every goal requires execution planning, and if you neglect that, most likely you will not be able to accomplish the goal.
Tip: Don’t just set your goals, plan their execution as well.
Well, having said all of this, we cannot deny the fact that accomplishing goals on a daily basis is a lot of mental and physical sweat, depending on the type of goal you’ve set. Now, that you know some of the reasons why people don’t reach their goals, you can improve on your set of shortcomings and reach the heights you are dreaming for.
Next up, we’ll be bringing you a series on how to set up your goals and then achieve them without fail.
